Rita Hoar, 87

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Rita Hoar, 87, of Williamstown, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at Sweet Brook Care Centers. Born in 1924 at Sunny Brook Farm, now the Rural Lands Foundation at Sheep Hill, she was the daughter of Henry L. and Eva Lancto George. She grew up working on her father's Yeadon Dairy Farm and attended Williamstown schools. After her marriage, she resided in Kansas, Ohio and New Jersey before returning to her family's farmhouse Mrs. Hoar worked as a secretary for Williams College and as a bookkeeper for the former House of Walsh. She was an active community member as president of her son's grade school PTA, treasurer of the Allendale, N.J., Newcomers Club, president of the board for the Williamstown House of Local History, treasurer of the Williamstown Garden Club and Massachusetts president and long-standing member of the Philanthropic Educators Organization. A devoted member of the church, she attended various congregations in each community in which she lived. Most recently, she returned to First Congregational Church, where she had been married and served on the Flower Committee and as the assistant historian. She was a skier, an avid tennis player and enjoyed bowling in various leagues. Her husband, Richard M. Hoar, whom she married in 1949 while he attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., died Dec. 1, 2010. She leaves her son, Andrew Hoar and his wife, Elaine, of Williamstown; her granddaughter, Celina, also of Williamstown; two nieces and their families of Texas, and countless cousins from the George family. She was predeceased by her sister Thelma FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service for Mrs. Hoar will be held Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Williamstown, with the Rev. Carrie Bail officiating. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 5, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Philanthropic Educators Organization (PEO) or First Congregational Church of Williamstown through the funeral home.
