Michael F. Callahan, 89

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Michael Francis Callahan, 89, of 300 Village Lane and formerly of 60 George Ave., North Adams, Mass., died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at home. Born in Williamstown, Mass., on June 14, 1921, son of Michael M. and Anna Walsh Callahan, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Callahan was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in its North Adams office. Before that, he worked at the former Cornish Wire Co. and operated a gas station on State Road in North Adams. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, where he held the amateur course record for a time. He also shot his age several times and also enjoyed bowling. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and his wife, the former Ruth West, were married on May 2, 1942. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Jane McGrath and her husband, Thomas, of North Adams and Patti Mears and her husband, Richie, of Arlington; two sons, William Callahan and his wife, Mia, of Burlington and Thomas Callahan, and his wife, Eileen, of Milton, Mass.; 11 grandchildren, Kelly Fehlner, Colleen Finnerty, Sean McGrath, Corey Mears, Kara Mears, Erin Mears, Lucas Trono, Derek Trono, Brady Callahan, Brenna Callahan and Devan Callahan; seven great-grandchildren, Abigail, Jack, Claire, Kayla, Megan, Parker and Chase, and nieces and nephews. Six brothers and sisters predeceased him: Anne McGrail, Mary Wyman and William, Thomas, John and Richard Callahan. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Callahan will be Wednesday, March 23, at 10:15 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts in care of the funeral home.
