Dr. Earle O. Brown Jr., 85

March 16, 2010

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Dr. Earle O. Brown Jr., 85, of 197 Longview Terrace died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.

Born in Williamstown on Nov. 29, 1924, a son of Earle O. and Edith Windrow Brown, he attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the Deerfield Academy in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree from Williams College and his medical degree from Albany (N.Y.) Medical College in 1947. He did his internship at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, Mich., and continued his residency at Ypsilanti (Mich.) State Hospital.

He was a Navy veteran of World Ward II.

Dr. Brown opened a private practice of psychiatry in North Adams in 1954 and practiced for more than 50 years.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. His professional associations included president of the Western Massachusetts Psychiatric Association, vice president of the Berkshire District Medical Society, an executive member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and a member the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society. His hospital affiliations included the North Adams Regional Hospital, with which he was an active staff member until 1996 and then an honorary member, and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He also was a past president of the Williamstown Rotary Club, former regional director of the Bank of New England, former member of the town Finance Committee and a board member of the House of Local History. He received an Award for Distinguished Service in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society for 50 years of service.

He and his wife, the former Harriet "Rita" Hill, were married Nov. 29, 1947, in New York.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Earle O. Brown III and his wife, Danuta, of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Donna J. Brown and her husband, Richard Martin, of Champaign, Ill., and four grandchildren, Amanda and Laura Brown and Reed and Paige Martin.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A graveside service for Dr. Brown will be held Saturday, March 27, at 10 a.m. in Westlawn Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Williams Inn.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations can be made to the Williamstown House of Local History or the donor's choice through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
