Laura Doran Carmel, 90

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Laura Dolores Doran Carmel, 90, of 105 Bradley St. died Friday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in North Adams on July 7, 1918, a daughter of Adriano and Francesca Pieri Rinaldi, she attended city schools, including Drury High School. Mrs. Carmel was employed as a head dietary aide in North Adams Regional Hospital's dietary department. She had first worked at the former Gale Shoe Co. and later assisted her husband, James R. Doran, in the operation of Doran Tile Co. She was a communicant of the former St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was a member of the Sons of Italy and of the ladies auxiliaries for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 996 and American Legion Post 125. She was active in the March of Dimes and served as its local chairman for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family. Her first husband, James R. Doran, whom she married Aug. 1, 1936, died Dec. 5, 1970. Her husband, Robert P. Carmel, whom she married March 18, 1972, died Aug. 10, 1983. She leaves two daughters, Sandra Morrissey of North Adams and Mary Ann Lummus and her husband, Daniel, of Dalton; two sons, James R. Doran Jr. and Richard A. Doran and his wife, Patricia, all of Kihei, Hawaii; a brother, Anthony J. Rinaldi and his wife, Beverly, of East Hartford, Conn.; a sister, Cecilia Dupuis of Williamstown; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Lucy Rinaldi and Frances Bissaillon. FUNERAL NOTICE - A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place Saturday morning at 9 from St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, will be Saturday from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Memorial donations are suggested for the Berkshire Community Action North program or American Legion Post 125 Ladies' Auxiliary Scholarship fund through the funeral home.
