T. William Lewis

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — T. William Lewis, 94, of 298 Beaver St. died Saturday evening, July 9, 2005, at North Adams Regional Hospital. He was the longest-serving probation officer in the history of the state and served a short time as acting clerk of the Northern Berkshire District Court. In 2005, the new district court building on Marshall Street was named in his honor. Born in North Adams on Sept. 9, 1910, son of William T. and Alice Kelly Lewis, he was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School. Mr. Lewis was appointed to the position of probation officer in 1941 by Judge John Magenis, serving 59 years until his retirement in February 2000. He also served as a truant officer for the city for many years and was the first elected president of the Massachusetts Association of Probation Officers from outside the Boston area. In 1975, he was one of four people honored by the Massachusetts Probation Officers as probation officers of the year. He was a former member of the North Adams Airport Commission and former chairman of the Board of Registrars. He was appointed by the state to swear in all notary public officials. Mr. Lewis was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a life member of the North Adams Lodge of Elks. He also was a member of Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown. He and his wife, the former Mamie Farinon, would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Sept. 2. They were married in St. Anthony's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas William Lewis and his wife, Carolyn, of Longmeadow; a daughter, Mary Lewis D'Arcangelo and her husband, Dennis, first assistant clerk magistrate of the Northern Berkshire District, of Clarksburg; a sister, Alyce Noble of Williamstown, and four grandchildren, Danny and Patrick Lewis, and Thomas and Sara D'Arcangelo, and nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Lewis will be celebrated tomorrow, July 12, 2005, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in the family lot in Southview Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Building Fund, the St. John Bosco Building Fund or to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
