Aloysius Michalenko, 71

ADAMS, Mass. — Aloysius Michalenko, 71, of 164 North Summer St. died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2005, at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after being admitted. Born in Adams on June 14, 1933, son of John and Victoria Betleja Michalenko, he graduated from the former Adams High School in 1951 and attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., for three years. He served several years with Company M of the Massachusetts National Guard in Adams. Mr. Michalenko was employed for 22 years as a custodian at C.H. McCann Technical School in North Adams, retiring in 1999. Earlier, he and his late brother, Ignatius Michalenko, owned and operated Adams Specialty and Printing Co. for several years. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church and a member and past president of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society. He helped build the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge. He was scoutmaster for more than 50 years of former Boy Scout Troop 56 and leader of its Explorer posts. He conducted the Scouts' recycling drives for many years and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest given by the Boy Scouts. Mr. Michalenko was a town meeting member for many years and an organizer of the former Youth Haven on Park Street. He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Windsor Pond in Windsor. He and his wife, the former Cecelia B. Biros, were married April 8, 1961. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Lawrence Michalenko and Peter Michalenko, both of Savoy, and Michael Michalenko of Adams; three brothers, the Rev. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, of the Congregation of Marian Fathers in Stockbridge; the Rev. Alexei Michalenko of Washington, D.C., chaplain of Georgetown University School of Law, and Joseph Michalenko of Moon Township, Pa.; two sisters, Sister Sophia Michalenko and Sister Victoria Michalenko, both of the Community of the Mother of the God of Tenderness in Danbury, Conn.; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily, Alex and Hailey Michalenko, all of Savoy, and Ryan and Nathan Michalenko, both of Adams, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Frank, Adolph, Ignatius and John Michalenko, and by a sister, Mary Adamcyzk. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for MR. Michalenko will be Thursday, Jan. 20, at 9 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by his brothers, the Rev. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, and the Rev. Alexei Michalenko. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Marian Fathers in Stockbridge or to the Community of the Mother of the God of Tenderness, both through the funeral home.
