John V. Michalenko Sr., 66

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - John Victor Michalenko Sr., 66, of 173 Mohawk Forest Blvd. died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams on March 8, 1938, son of John and Victoria Betleja Michalenko, he attended St. Stanislaus' School and was a 1956 graduate of the former Adams Memorial High School, where he was vice president of the senior class. He was a member of the National Guard, serving with Company M and, later, with the 2nd Combat Support Company, 104th Yankee Division, both in Adams. He also was an Air Force veteran, serving with the 392nd Combat Support Group. Mr. Michalenko was employed for several years as meat manager at the former Adams Super Markets during the 1960s and later worked for the former Grand Union Supermarket in Williamstown. He also was employed by Adams Specialty and Printing Co. and was known for his printing of the Shopper's Companion Newspaper. He then became co-owner of the Village Taxi Service in Williamstown and was last employed part time by Norm's Limousine & Taxi Service in North Adams. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 310 and a former Cub Scout Leader for Pack 104. He enjoyed fishing. He and his wife, the former Ann Bass, celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary July 28. They were married in St. Stanislaus' Church in Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Lisa Vanderburgh and Amy Ritcher, both of North Adams, and Mary Scanlon of Bennington, Vt.; two sons, John V. Michalenko of Adams and Stephen B. Michalenko of North Adams; two sisters, Sister Sophia Michalenko and Sister Victoria Michalenko, both of the Community of the Mother of God of Tenderness in Danbury, Conn.; four brothers, the Rev. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, of the Marian Fathers in Stockbridge, the Rev. Alexi Michalenko of Alexandria, Va., chaplain at Georgetown Law School, Joseph Michalenko of Moon Township, Pa., and Aloysius Michalenko of Adams, and five grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Ritcher, Lyman Vanderburgh lV, and Robert and Matthew Scanlon. He was predeceased by a grandson, David John Ritcher; by three brothers, Ignatius, Adolph and Frank Michalenko, and by a sister, Mary Adamcyzk. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Michalenko will be tomorrow, Dec. 15, at 8:45 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Adams at 10 concelebrated by the Rev. Seraphim Michalenko and the Rev. Alexi Michalenko. Burial with military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tonight from 5 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Ambulance Service through the funeral home.
