Richard V. Harris, 76

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Richard Victor "Red" Harris, 76, of 300 Henderson Road, a former resident of Rowe, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Somerville on Sept. 25, 1927, son of Albert Victor and Dorothy Foster Harris, he graduated from New Bedford High School. He graduated from Bryant Business College in Providence, R.I., with a bachelor's degree in business administration. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the infantry and obtained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Harris was an administrator of Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, becoming executive vice president in 1979 and retiring in 1990 after five years as president. He first worked for the Hoosac Mills Corp. in New Bedford and then was transferred to the North Adams plant in 1959, where he was general manager and controller. In 1972, Mr. Harris became assistant administrator for Farren Memorial Hospital in Turners Falls. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He coached for several years in youth baseball leagues in Williamstown and was a referee in the Williamstown peewee football league. He was a former member of the North Adams Rotary Club, the Industrial Management Club of Northern Berkshire, and a former director of the United Way Fund in North Adams and a former member of the Greenfield Kiwanis Club, and participated in other civic activities. He also was a member of the American Hospital Association, Hospital Financial Management Association, Western Massachusetts Administrators Council and the New England Conference of the Catholic Hospital Association. He and his wife, the former Jean L. Richards, were married Sept. 9, 1950. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Mark Victor Harris of Williamstown and Scott Stuart Harris of Cranston, R.I.; two daughters-in-law, Jill Harris and Jacalyn Harris; a sister, June Hastings of New Bedford, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mr. Harris will take place Tuesday at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME for FUNERALS, West Chapels, with the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor of First Congregational Church of North Adams, officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours at the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Monday from 4 to 7.
