George F. Knapp, 92

ADAMS, Mass. â€' George Franklin Knapp, 92, of 4 West Pine St. died Monday, May 19, 2003, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Bennington, Vt., on Aug. 28, 1910, son of William M. and Anna C. Oliver Knapp, he graduated from the former Bennington High School. A member of the 104th Infantry, 26th Division, Company K, of the National Guard for 19 years, he took part in guarding the Hoosac Tunnel during World War II. Mr. Knapp was a custodian for the North Adams school system, retiring in 1989. Previously, he had been employed with the Jones Division of the former Arnold Print Works and by the former Bright Water Paper Co. Mr. Knapp was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas. He was a member of the North Adams Auxiliary Police for two years and the Northern Berkshire Association of Former Athletes. He enjoyed painting and gardening. His first wife, the former Agnes Dupras, died in 1965. His second wife, the former Aldora Barkam, died in 1974. He leaves his wife, the former Mary "Mabel" Dupras, whom he married Oct. 14, 1978; two sons, Robert G. Knapp of Simi Valley, Calif., and William F. Knapp of Adams; two stepsons, Donald H. Carrier of Syracuse, N.Y., and Wilfred J. Carrier of Stamford, Vt., whom he loved as his own; two daughters, Joan M. Brown and Rita DeMarco, both of North Adams; a brother, William Knapp of Troy, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Raymond Knapp, Wilfred Knapp and James Knapp, and his sisters Ruth Harris, Edna Harris, Dorothy DeMarco and Marian DeCoigne. FUNERAL NOTICE â€' The funeral for Mr. Knapp will be Thursday, May 22, at 11 from TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon at Notre Dame Church in Adams. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or the Adams Volunteer Fire Department through the funeral home, 6 Summer St., Adams.
