Carl H. Cook, 76

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Carl Herman Cook, 76, of 120 Welch Road died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after he was admitted. Born in North Adams on May 30, 1925, son of Charles and Alma Hermann Cook, he attended Drury High School. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he entered the service on Aug. 16, 1943, and was a private, first class, with Company A, 320th Infantry, in the European theater, participating in the battles of the Po Valley and the North Appenines, and of Rome-Arno. His medals included the European, African Middle-Eastern Theater Medal with three bronze stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged Nov. 21, 1945. Mr. Cook was employed as a technician with GE in Pittsfield for 27 years. He retired in 1990. He owned and operated Carl's Radio & TV Repair for many years. He also had been employed by the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates in North Adams as a speeder tender, and by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams until 1963. A lifelong communicant of St. Francis' Church in North Adams, he was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs. He was a life member of Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Adams, and sang taps and folded the flag at veterans' funerals for many years. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing and volunteered with the Aladdins, a local music group that entertained at local nursing homes. He also sang at memorial services for veterans until ill health forced his retirement. He and his wife, the former Jane Marie Belanger, were married June 17, 1948, in St. Francis' Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Linda M. Cook of Clarksburg; two sons, John C. Cook and Gary J. Cook, both of Clarksburg; a brother, Paul C. Cook of Clarksburg; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A son, Bernard W. Cook, died May 8, 1978. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Cook will be Monday, April 1, at 12:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 1:15 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial will take place later in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, March 31, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations made to the St. Francis' Building Fund through the funeral home.
