Jennie M. Gavazzi, 72

ADAMS, Mass. — Jennie Mary Gavazzi, 72, of Columbia Valley, Apt. 44, 4 Columbia St., Sunday, died Jan. 21, 2001, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, where she was admitted Jan. 17. She had been ill for some time. Born in North Adams on Dec. 18, 1928, daughter of Giovanni and Rosa Petta Ponte, she was a graduate of Drury High School and a 1951 graduate of the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsfield. A registered nurse, Mrs. Gavazzi was first employed as a staff nurse at North Adams Regional Hospital and then at Albany (N.Y.) Veterans Hospital. She returned to North Adams Hospital in 1955 and worked at the former W.B. Plunkett Memorial Hospital. She was also associated with the former Visiting Nurse Association of North Adams and was a school nurse in Adams. She was worked with Elder Services of North Adams, retiring in 1989. A communicant of St. Anthony's Church in North Adams, Mrs. Gavazzi also attended the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas. She was an active volunteer with the Columbia Elderly Center and an active member of the former Howland Avenue School Parent-Teacher Group. She and her husband, Arnaldo Gavazzi, would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary May 21. They were married in St. Anthony's Church. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Mary Rose Gavazzi-Haupt of Peru; two sons, Eugene A. Gavazzi, a member of the Adams Police Department, and Steven A. Gavazzi of North Adams; a sister, Dolores Williams of Pittsfield; a brother, D. Anthony Ponti, a retired North Adams Fire Department lieutenant, and five grandchildren, Gina Marie and Mitchell D. Gavazzi of Adams, and Anthony S., Christopher A. and Jennevieve M. Gavazzi of North Adams. She was predeceased by her sisters Beatrice C. Ponti, Catherine Herzig and Anita Parmenter, and a brother, Vincent S. Ponti. FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mrs. Gavazzi will be Thursday, Jan. 25, at 9:30 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 70 Marshall St., with the Rev. Daniel J. O'Hear, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Jimmy Fund through the funeral home, which is in charge of arrangements.
