Frank S. Mazza, 86

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Frank Saverio "Pancho" Mazza, 86, of 31 Veazie St. died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after being admitted. Born in North Adams on Sept. 22, 1915, son of Pasquale and Costanza Astorino Mazza, he attended local schools, including Drury High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with Company B of the 9th armored engineered battalion of the 4th Armored Division under Gen. George Patton. He was in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star, and the European, African and Middle Eastern theater medals. Before entering the service, he was employed by the former Arnold Print Works in North Adams. He was later employed by the former Wise Clothing & Shoe Store in the shoe department. Mr. Mazza became a career bartender for various establishments in Northern Berkshire, including Matt's Lodge in Adams, the Commercial Street Cafe, the Town House and the Underground in Adams, and Dodd's Tavern in North Adams. He was also head bartender at Pancho and Cisco's lounge in Adams. He retired in 1976 after more than 30 years of bartending. He was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church. He was a member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars. His wife, the former Alida Clermont, whom he married May 28, 1953, died May 18, 1998. He leaves a stepdaughter, Aline Mandeville of Adams; a stepson, Henry Mandeville of Pittsfield; two sisters, Genevieve Mazza Murach of Adams and Esther Mazza Poplaski of North Adams, five stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings Christine Lincoln, Mary Severino, Angelo Mazza, Peter Mazza, Russell Mazza, Joseph Mazza, Pasquale "Pat" Mazza, and four others in infancy. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Mazza will take place Friday, Dec. 14, at 9:45 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapel, 74 Marshall St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church Parish Center, 68 Marshall St. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for St. Jude Children's Hospital or the St. Anthony Building Fund through the funeral home.
