Pierina Major, 93
ADAMS, Mass. — Pierina "Polly" Major, 93, of 75 Commercial St. died peacefully Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown.
Born in the town of Florida on Sept. 14, 1919, a daughter of Pasquale and Maria Bove Pitaniello, she attended schools in Stamford, Vt., and on the Mohawk Trail.
Ms. Major was employed as a waitress at many local establishments, including the former Rosa Restaurant, Emily's and Green Acres, and retired from the Highland Restaurant in the early 1980s.
After her retirement, she worked as a caretaker at the summer home of the Kruss family in Pittsfield, where she took great pride in caring for the flowerbeds.
She enjoyed traveling with her siblings to Arizona, Florida and Hawaii, and loved spending time with her immediate and extended family. A wonderful cook, she sharing of her home-cooked meals with family and friends or going out to dinner were among her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors. In her later years, she spent many summer days picnicking with her sisters at Windsor Lake in North Adams.
She leaves a daughter, Cheryl Clermont of Melbourne, Fla.; a son, William Major of Pittsfield; a sister, Marie Shimabukuro of Hawaii; five grandchildren, Laurie Therrien of Adams, Adam Clermont of Hong Kong, William Major of Springhill, Fla., and Evander and Costanza Major, both of Nassau, N.Y., three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Her brothers Frank, Patrick and Carmine Pitaniello and sisters, Ida "Edith" Soldato, Jean Maselli and Josephine Bishop predeceased her.
FUNERAL NOTICE — There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service for Ms. Major will be held with burial to follow in the family lot in Southview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals.
