ADAMS, Mass. — Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter Public School will host Cajun fiddler Mitch Reed as part of a weeklong artist-in-residency at the school.

A member of the Grammy Award-winning zydeco band BeauSoleil, Reed will spend March 1 through March 5 introducing BArT students to Cajun history and culture through music and stories. Mr. Reed will offer workshops, visit classes, and engage students in music making. The project is funded in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Reed began playing fiddle when he was 15 years old, and during his career has played alongside the likes of Michael Doucet, Dirk Powell & Christine Balfa, Steve Riley, Natalie McMaster and Kenny Baker. Mr. Reed has formed several notable bands including Charivari, Tasso and The Lafayette Rhythm Devils. In 1992 his group McCauley, Reed and Vidrine received the Cajun French Music Association President’s Award for Commitment to the Preservation of Traditional Cajun Music. In 2008 his band Racines received a Grammy nomination.

In addition to performing, Reed is also a traditional music instructor. Over the years, he has taught at several fiddle camps, including those hosted by Jay Ungar and Mark O’Connor. Since 1989 he has worked with the Smithsonian Institution Office of Folklife Programs. He currently plays with BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, where he has performed on four Grammy-nominated albums, including "Live at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival," which won a Grammy award in 2009.

Mitch Reed’s residency at BArT will conclude with a public performance at BountiFare Restaurant in Adams on Saturday, March 6 at 8 p.m., where he will perform with other local musicians. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For tickets call BArT at 743-7311, ext. 532 or visit either Charles Phykitt Insurance Agency on Main Street in North Adams or the Daily Grind on Park Street in Adams. Proceeds from the performance support BArT’s arts programs.

Moderator Carol Francesconi, left, and Anne Marie Furey were presented flowers in memory of the Rev. William Furey, their brother and husband, respectively. The town report was dedicated to him.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Town meeting on Monday approved all 35 articles on the annual meeting warrant, including a total spending for fiscal 2027 of more than $8.5 million.

Some 77 of the town's more than 2,500 registered voters filled the Cheshire Community House meeting room, debating on a number of articles during the meeting that lasted nearly three hours

The town dedicated its annual report to the Rev. William David Furey, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church and more recently Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesborough. Furey died last year at age 77.

His wife, Anne Marie Furey, and his sister, Town Moderator Carol Francesconi, were presented with a bouquet of flowers in tribute to him.

He was an exemplary member of the community who left a lasting impression in each and every life that he touched, said Town Clerk Whitney Flynn.

Voters approved several warrant articles that make up an operating budget of $3,840,314 for fiscal 2027. Of this amount, $1,642,481 is allocated for the general government budget, which was approved after clarification of a few questions.

One item was the administrative assistant's salary. Prior to the annual meeting, the town eliminated the executive assistant salary of $54,309 in favor of a part-time administrative assistant salary of $27,155, to reduce costs considering the financial constraint the town is in.
