Sullivan was selected from more than 250 schools as the winner of a paint grant through Carr Hardware's partnership with True Value Foundation's "Painting a Brighter Future" program designed to help renew an atmosphere that sets a positive tone for educators to teach and children to learn.
Carr Hardware notified neighborhood schools of the grant last fall and encouraged them to apply. The company, with branches in North Adams, Pittsfield, Lee, Great Barrington and now Watervliet, N. Y., delivered the paint to the school on Kemp Avenue.
"Carr Hardware is very happy to help Sullivan Elementary School and give back to the community we love to serve," said Bart Raser, co-owner and vice president. "The donation will not only save money for Sullivan Elementary but, more importantly, it will create an environment that fosters learning, inspires creativity, and builds community.”"
Carr Hardware introduced the program to the area, championing the cause of enhancing the educational environment in the community. Elementary, junior high and high schools that met basic qualifications were identified and encouraged to apply for the paint grant, which was awarded based on need.
An extensive judging process evaluated several aspects of the school, including student population, involvement with the surrounding community, and the reasoning behind the school’s request. Using this set of criteria, an advisory committee identified the top 60 applicants as grant winners.
No stranger to community involvement, Carr Hardware welcomed the opportunity to participate in this local initiative and act as a grassroots conduit, bringing positive change to more people in the North Adams community.
