Richard H. Gatland, 94
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Richard H. Gatland, 94, of Sweetwod Retirement Community, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.Born in Lancaster, Pa., on Dec. 10, 1914, son of Arthur and Mariam Zimmerman Gatland, he graduated from Hamilton College in New York in 1936. He resided in Orchard Park, N.Y., and later in North Carolina and Virginia, until moving to Williamstown 11 years ago.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as an officer.
Mr. Gatland worked for Goodyear Tire Co. and was treasurer of Pierce & Stevens in New York for many years.
He volunteered at the local library and was active in book clubs. While in Orchard Park, he and his wife, the former Lillian A. Bickford, were members of a choral society.
His wife, whom he married Aug. 24, 1946, died on Oct. 7, 2008.
He leaves a daughter, Judy Gatland and her husband, Jon Lord, of Sunderland, and three grandchildren.
Another daughter, Susan Gatland, died in 1999.
