Hubert M. 'Hugh' Muir, 83
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Hubert Machado "Hugh" Muir, 83, of Sweetwood Retirement Community, died Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at home.Born in New Bedford on June 14, 1926, son of Hubert J. and Gertrude Machado Muir, he graduated from New Bedford High School in 1944 and attended the Southeastern Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also took graduate courses at several different colleges and universities. He moved to Williamstown in 2004.
Mr. Muir was president of Materials Science Co., a company he founded and operated since 1973. He also worked at Stanford University, Dow Corning Corp., and in the aerospace industry. He held several patents.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed reading and was active in several local libraries. He was a former docent at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
His wife, the former Eleanor M. Barrett, whom he married July 24, 1948, died on July 26, 2006.
He leaves two sons, Michael Muir-Harmony of Bernardston and Stephen Muir of Forestville, Calif.; a daughter, Kathleen Lightbody of Waxhaw, N.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His sister, Christine Eldred, is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service for Mr. Muir will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown. Burial will be at a later date in St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford.
