Sterling R. Hewitt, 84
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Sterling R. Hewitt, 84, of 200 East Quincy St. died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Williamstown Commons.Born in North Adams on Aug. 11, 1925, son of Frank and Fannie Brockway Hewitt, he attended schools in Clarksburg and Drury High School.
A decorated Marine veteran of Word War II, he served with the rank of private, first class, and was awarded the Purple Heart and several other medals.
Mr. Hewitt was employed for many years as a foreman at the former Sprague Electric Co. plant on Brown Street.
He was a longtime active member and past president of Peter A. Cook Clarksburg VFW Post 9144. He was a member of the Interstatesman Drum and Bugle Corps and enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling and softball.
His wife, the former Irene Brooks, whom he married June 29, 1946, died Jan. 23, 2006.
He leaves a son, Robert F. Hewitt and his wife, Lynn, of North Adams, three grandchildren, Keith Hewitt of Adams and Kurt and Katie Hewitt, both of North Adams, and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Frances Simmons, John Hewitt and Frank Hewitt.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial with military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the Clarksburg VFW through the funeral home.
