James V. Walsh, 62
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — James V. Walsh, 62, of 26 Hall St., died Monday, June 29, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital of complications from lung cancer.Born in Adams on Feb. 27, 1947, son of John J. and Mary G. Toohey Walsh, he was a 1964 graduate of the former Adams Memorial High School. He graduated with honors in English from Williams College in 1968.
A journalist, Mr. Walsh began his career as an award-winning reporter for the North Adams Transcript, covering City Hall. In 1978, he embarked on travels throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, an extended journey that included experiences in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and playing a minor role in a film in India. His travels took him to Hong Kong, where he worked for the next 10 years as a general editor for the former print edition of Asiaweek, a Time Magazine subsidiary. A note to readers preceding his 1983 cover story in the weekly about the prospects of nuclear war praised the "meticulous checking he has been known for during nearly 15 years in journalism."
He began working for Time's international editions in 1990, first in New York City and then in London as a senior writer, responsible for numerous cover stories during his 10-year tenure with the company. He returned to the United States when he retired in 1999.
He leaves a brother, Thomas A. Walsh of Adams; a sister, Mary E. Potter and her husband, Richard, of Plainfield, and nieces and nephews.
His brother John Walsh died in 1992 and his sister Roberta Costine in 2004.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours for Mr. Walsh will take place Friday, July 3, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. A memorial service will take place at the convenience of the family.
