Stanley E. Ball, 78

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — Stanley E. Ball, 78, of Salisbury Road died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where he had been a resident for nearly two years.

Born on April 1, 1931, he was the son of Robert and Hareptia Winters Ball.

He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Ball was a self-taught carpenter, stone mason, bricklayer, builder, painter, furniture maker, landscaper and gardener. His family described him as talented yet humble, both a master- and jack-of-all-trades.

He was a lover of nature, plants, animals, sunrises, sunsets, warm days and the first snowfall. He was a life member of James A. Modolo VFW Post 8348 in Great Barrington. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.


He leaves his wife of 19 years, Karen Ball; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Rosemary Ball;
two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Peter Cain and Theresa and David Bunnel; two sisters, Jesse Malumphy and Eleanor O'Brien; his stepchildren Chris and Kelly Sullivan, Shawn and Tammy Sullivan and Heather Sullivan and her partner, Joe Hulbert; 11 grandchildren, Sam, Aubrey and Michala Cain, Mark and John Bunnell, Jonathan, Jessica and Meghan Ball, and Kodi, Kelsie and Caebre Sullivan.

He was predeceased by his sister Bertha Ball and four brothers, Robert Ball, David Ball, Philip Ball and Roger Ball.

FUNERAL NOTICE — In keeping with Mr. Ball's wishes, he will be cremated. There will be no calling hours, service or burial. The family will have a celebration of his life in the future.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, the American Lung Association or HospiceCare in the Berkshires through Finnerty and Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is handling the arrangements. His family wishes to thank Dr. Andrew Potler and HospiceCare for treating Mr. Ball with tenderness and compassion, and for allowing him to pass from their loving arms into those of their Heavenly Father with comfort, grace and dignity.
