Luella DeLand, 94
ALFORD, Mass. — Luella DeLand, 94, of Green River Road died Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009, at her home.Born in New Marlborough on Jan. 4, 1915, daughter of John F. and Lovina Bailey Markham, she attended Sheffield schools. She had resided in Alford for more than 70 years.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. DeLand loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed knitting and sewing for her family, along with canning. She also enjoyed outings with her family, going camping and especially caring for her grandchildren. She was a former member of the Alford Grange and the Alford Methodist Church.
Her husband, John A. DeLand Sr., whom she married July 21, 1934, in Hillsdale, N.Y., died in July 1978.
She leaves two daughters, Doris Miller and her husband, Ken, of Copake Falls, N.Y., and Karen DeLand and her companion, Michael Murphy, of Alford; four sons, John A. DeLand Jr. and his wife, Penny, of Housatonic, Charles DeLand of Worcester, Stephen DeLand Sr. and his wife, Hisae, of Japan and Brian DeLand and his companion, Andrea Eichstedt, of Sheffield; two sisters, Ethel E. Hitchcock and Leona Brazee, both of Sheffield; 12 grandchildren, Melissa Waldron, Patrick McGuire, John DeLand III, Kristen and Brittney DeLand, Jeffrey and James DeLand, Stephen DeLand Jr. and Samantha DeLand, Jamie and Eric Eichstedt and Brian DeLand Jr., and nine great-grandchildren, Amy, Adam, Heather, Christopher, Emily, Daniel, Connor, Hannah and Lyndsey.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Hazel Palmer, Marjorie Bradley and Elsie Gingras, and three brothers, Louis Markham, John Markham Jr. and William W. Markham
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. DeLand will be held on Wednesday, May 27, at 11 from Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26, from 4 until 6 at the funeral home.
