George E. Couture, 88
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - George Eugene Couture, 88, of 181 Bridges Road died Friday morning, Nov. 23, 2007, at his home.Born in North Adams on Dec. 7, 1918, a son of Alfred and Amelia Poissant Couture, he attended schools in North Adams.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 282nd Quartermaster Company in the European theater of operations.
Mr. Couture was employed by the former Cornish Wire Co. for 43 years until his retirement in 1982. Earlier, he worked in construction of the Hadley Overpass in North Adams.
He was a communicant of the Parish of Sts. Patrick & Raphael and a member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion.
His wife, the former Catherine P. McCann, whom he married on Jan. 19, 1946, died Oct. 27, 2001.
He leaves a son, Eugene T. Couture of Bakersfield, Calif., three daughters, Kathryn M. Birkett, who resided with him, Barbara A. Couture of Williamstown and Paula J. Couture of Adams; two foster sons, Kevin F. Rooney of Syracuse, N.Y., and Terry P. Rooney of Orange; 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Nowak and Florina Strange, and two grandchildren, Jody and Miguel Couture.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Couture will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 28, at noon from St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Mark Burke, pastor. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Patrick's Food Pantry in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
