William S. Daniels, 86

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - William Stewart "Bill" Daniels, 86, of Maple Street died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born in North Adams on April 18, 1922, son of Arthur Homer Daniels Sr. and Bernice Clark McIntyre Daniels, he graduated from Drury High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted on March 26, 1943, joining the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. In December 1944, the division was sent to Italy to fight under Gen. Mark Clark. He was discharged on Feb. 3, 1946.

Mr. Daniels was employed as an outside salesman by Excelsior Printing Co., retiring in 1985. He had first worked at Excelsior after the war. He bought Crown Paper and Paint Co. in 1955 and operated it as Danco Hardware until 1967.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving on most of the boards, including 12 years as a trustee. He was a member of the former North Adams Chamber of Commerce, the Lafayette-Greylock Lodge of Masons, the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills, the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division.

He leaves his wife, the former Helen Corey; two sisters, Ivis Lewis of North Adams and Eleanor Brown of Bennington, Vt.; many nieces and nephews, including his caregivers Cairn Cross of Vergennes, Vt., and Marcia and Carl Donega of Adams, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Predeceased by two brothers, Arthur H. Daniels Jr. in 2007 and Gerald Daniels in 1970, and two sisters Constance Daniels in 1920 and Dorothy Whitehead on April 22, 1988.

FUNERAL NOTICE - Services for Mr. Daniels will be conducted at Friday, April 10, at 11 from First Baptist Church, 131 Main St., North Adams, by the Rev. David Anderson. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.

Calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Auge-San Soucie Simmons Funeral Home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church or to Williamstown Commons in care of the funeral home.
