Charlotte M. Hare, 87

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — Charlotte May Griffen Hare, 87, formerly of Cherry Hill Road, died Sunday evening, Feb. 15, 2009, at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. She had been a resident of Fairview Commons in Great Barrington since 2002.

Born on May 14, 1921 in Mamaroneck, N.Y., daughter of Austin Kendall and Alice Hull Carpenter Griffen, she graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1939 and attended Skidmore College in Saratoga, N.Y.
She moved to Stockbridge in 1947.

Mrs. Hare was a member of St. Paul's Church and served on its Altar Guild. She was the model for Norman Rockwell's Boy Scout calendars with her sons the late William E. Hare II and Brewster "Bruce" Hare.

She will be remembered by those who knew her for her quick wit and ability to make word puns, her love of nature, especially gardening and birdwatching, and her musical abilities.

Her husband, LeRoy Hare, whom she married March 16, 1940, at Croton (N.Y.) Valley Meeting House, died in 2002.

Besides her son Brewster, of Austerlitz, N.Y, she leaves another son, Roy Ira Hare of Amherst; four daughters, Barbara Hare Beacco of Penobscot, Maine, Marion L. Hare of Fort Myers, Fla., Susan "Betsy" Cobb of Monterey and Sandra Hare of Ellington, Conn.; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and significant friends and relatives Patricia Hare, Robin Hare, John Beacco, David Purdue, Christopher Cobb and Randy Cline.

Her son William E. Hare II died in 1999.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The family will celebrate the gifts of Mrs. Hare's life in May at a graveside ceremony in White Plains (N.Y.) Rural Cemetery.
