Helen D. Ostrowski, 91
ADAMS, Mass. — Helen D. Ostrowski, 91, of 5 Elm St., died Sunday morning, Feb. 15, 2009, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.Born in Adams on Aug. 15, 1917, daughter of Jacob and Margaret Petz Diesz, she attended Adams schools.
Mrs. Ostrowski had assisted in operating the family business, Al's Service Station on Commercial Street, including being the bookkeeper until 1990. She particularly enjoyed going on wrecker calls with her daughter, Carol Ostrowski. She had first worked for the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for several years.
She was a communicant of the former St. Thomas Aquinas Church. She enjoyed traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people. She loved her dogs Pocahontas and Jake, flowers, gardening and sitting on the swing in her yard, greeting people as they passed by. Her favorite saying was "just do it." She was deeply religious and always wore a gold chain with a picture of Jesus on it.
Her husband, Alfred V. Ostrowski, whom she married on Nov. 15, 1952, died Aug. 7, 2002.
Besides her daughter Carol, with whom she resided, she leaves two other daughters, Diane Whalen and her husband, Kevin, of Pittsfield and Sally-Jo Hunt and her husband, Timothy, of Cheshire; a son, Alfred V. "Rick" Ostrowski Jr. and his wife, Susan, of North Adams; eight grandchildren, Dr. Michael Whalen of New York City, Matthew Whalen of Toulouse, France, Daniel Whalen of Boston, Stephanie Hunt and Victoria Hunt, both of Cheshire, and Nicholas Mekdeci, Bradley Ostrowski and Jacob Ostrowski, all of North Adams.
She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Petravice, and a brother, Jacob Diesz Jr.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Ostrowski will take place Thursday, Feb. 19, at 10 from Trottier-Pringle Funeral Home, 6 Summer St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Mary of Assumption Church in Cheshire celebrated by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery in Adams.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to the Berkshire Humane Society through the funeral home.
