Bernard E. Phaneuf, 73

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Bernard Edward Phaneuf, 73, of 17 Nelson St., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at home.

Born in North Adams on Sept. 15, 1934, son of Arthur Noel and Emma Plante Phaneuf, he attended local schools, including the former Holy Family Elementary School, and graduated from Drury High School.

Veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard, he served until his discharge with the rank of corporal.

Mr. Phaneuf was employed as a steam engineer for several local paper mills and retired from King Seale Paper Mill in Adams in 1998. He was secretary and treasurer of Local 182.

He was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church in North Adams and was a Eucharistic minister there. A life member of the Masons, he was a member of Lafayette Lodge and also of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 310, the Naomi Chapter 17 Order of Eastern Star, the Melha Shrine, the Berkshire Shrine Club and the Knights Templar.

He and his wife, the former Theresa P. Bergeron, celebrated 55 years of marriage on Sept. 27. They were married in the former Notre Dame Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Richard Hiser and Carol and Michael Sunn, both of North Adams; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Theresa Phaneuf and David and Kathleen Phaneuf of North Adams; a sister, Constance Duteau of Williamstown; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Rolland, Alphonse and Hormidas Phaneuf.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Bernard E. Phaneuf will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from FLYNN AND DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to Shriners Children's hospital or FORD (Friends of Renal Dialysis) at BMC in care of the funeral home.
