Mary K. Germanowski, 86

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. â€' Mary Katherine Germanowski, 86, formerly of 10 Hodges Cross Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown after a long illness.

Born in North Adams on June 3, 1921, daughter of John B. and Mary Rosasco Florini, she graduated with highest honors from Drury High School in 1939 and summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Bryant College in 1941.

Mrs. Germanowski was employed from 1944 to 1946 by General Electric Co. in the Plastics Division as a cost accountant and, from 1959 to 1961, in GE Ordnance as an auditor. She also worked for a variety of family businesses, including the former Florini's Italian Gardens on the corner of Holden and Center streets, for Williams College as a payroll clerk during the 1970s and as a secretary-bookkeeper at the Adams Housing Authority in the 1980s. After college, she had moved to Detroit and worked as an accountant for the former Darin & Armstrong, a subcontractor for General Motors Corp.

She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, serving on the Parish Council and teaching Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. She worked at various church functions, including the annual St. Anthony's Bazaar. She was treasurer of the Italian Catholic Girls Club and a member of the Daughters of Mary, the St. Anthony Rosary Sodality and the North Adams Sons of Italy.

Mrs. Germanowski enjoyed bowling, opera, classical music and crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was the love of family and friends over her lifetime.

Her husband, Bernard V. Germanowski, whom she married June 24, 1961, died April 10, 2005.

She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, John and Deborah Germanowski of Williamstown; a brother, former North Adams Mayor Francis C. Florini of Manchester, a grandson, Matthew Germanowski of Williamstown, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Tina Marie Germanowski, died Jan. 31, 2004, in Fort Collins, Colo., and her siblings Norma "Tina" Carter and Joseph V. Florini.

FUNERAL NOTICE â€' A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mary Germanowski will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, will be Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Anthony Capital Campaign, North Adams Regional Hospital CARE Campaign, Sweet Brook Patient Activities Fund, Edmundite Missions or the House of Peace and Education, all in care of the funeral home.
