Raymond L. Cutler Jr., 84
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Raymond Lewis Cutler Jr., 84, of 26 Mohawk Forest Blvd. died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at North Adams Regional Hospital.Born in North Adams on May 10, 1922, son of Raymond Cutler Sr. and Margaret Naughton Cutler, he graduated from Drury High School in 1940.
An Army veteran of World War II, he entered the service in 1942 and served with the Company B, 84th Mortar Battalion, as a staff sergeant. He participated in the Sicilian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno campaigns and was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with three bronze stars. He also earned a Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Mr. Cutler operated the scales department at City Hall and later was the city's sealer of weights and measures, until retiring in 1974 because of poor health. He had worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. before joining the service.
He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. He was a member of both the Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 VFW and Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion, both in North Adams. He also served as past president of Weights and Measures Association of Western Massachusetts for several years. He enjoyed to fishing and gardening.
He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor Chalifoux, whom he married May 31, 1952; a daughter, Gayle Batchelder of Clarksburg; two sons, Kevin Cutler of Dover, N.H. and Christopher Cutler of North Adams; two brothers, Alton Cutler of North Adams and Robert Cutler of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Kristin Duncan, Amy Smith, Cassandra Brazeau, and Karli Rae Cutler, and five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Abby Smith, and Hunter, Chandler and Alyssa Duncan.
He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Cutler.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Cutler will take place Monday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS. Burial will follow with military honors in the family plot in Southview Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the VFW of North Adams or the American Legion of North Adams through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
