Raymond L. Garand, 71
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Raymond Lionel Garand, 71, of 1175 Main St. died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at North Adams Regional Hospital after a long illness.Born in North Adams on Sept. 27, 1935, son of Loretta Remillard Garand and the late Lionel Garand, he was a 1954 graduate of Drury High School.
He served in the Air Force as a French interpreter in Africa and was a crew chief on planes flying national surveillance.
A machinist, Mr. Garand was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. for 17 years and also by Williams College. He also was a tool and die maker at Marland Mold and, later, at Steinerfilm.
He was a member of the Williamstown Lions Club in the 1970s and enjoyed boating and camping at Lake Bomoseen, Vt., with his family. He also was active in CB radio and was known as "Prowler One." A craftsman, he spent many years renovating and remodeling his home.
He and his wife, the former Mary R. Stackpoole, would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary Nov. 22.
Besides his wife and mother, of North Adams, he leaves a daughter, Holly M. Saunders and her companion, Thomas Saunders, of North Adams; a son, Gary M. Garand of Pittsfield, and three granddaughters, Kate Saunders of North Adams, Lisa Garand of Colorado and Samantha Garand, currently serving in the Army in Germany.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The family of Mr. Garand will hold a private memorial service in the spring. There will be no calling hours.
