Joseph P. McCann, 87

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Joseph P. McCann, 87, of 535 Barbour St., a former longtime resident of Williamstown, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.

Mr. McCann was the first building and sign inspector for the town of Williamstown and served 12 years as a clerk on the Appeals Board.

Born in Lowell on March 14, 1918, son of John F. and Catherine O'Leary McCann, he attended trade school in Lowell and at Drury High School, and was a 1936 graduate of the former Williamstown High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 504th Military Police Battalion in the European theater.

Mr. McCann was building and sign inspector for 17 years. He also worked as a cabinetmaker and supervisor for the Williams College science shops for 36 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown for more than 60 years. In 1974, he directed its renovation. He was a former member of the Waubeeka and Taconic golf clubs in Williamstown.

His first wife, the former Blanche Louise Lamphier, whom he married Feb. 22, 1941, in St. Raphael's Church in Williamstown, died April 8, 1989.

He and his wife, the former Veronica Allard Dobrowolski, were married Aug. 22, 1992, in Holy Family Church in North Adams.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Martha L. Ouellette and her husband, Emile, of Williamstown and Joanne M. LaMont of Woodbury, Conn.; a sister, Margaret M. McCann of Framingham; four granddaughters, Heather Hubbard, Carol Choudhury, Cathy Ouellette and Amy Shaw, and three great-grandchildren, Liam Hubbard, Shayla Shaw and Amelia Scott.

Five brothers and two sisters are deceased, Charles, Edward, Thomas, John and Paul McCann, and Mary Mancuso and Catherine P. Couture.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Joseph P. McCann will be celebrated Thursday, July 14, 2005, at noon at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown. Burial with veterans' honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Sweet Brook Care Centers Resident Council in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
