Salvatore Mirante, 84
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Salvatore "Sammy" Mirante, 84, of 20 Williams St. died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at North Adams Commons, where he had resided since September 2004.Born in North Adams on Oct. 4, 1920, son of Antonio and Rosaria Pulanno Mirante, he was educated in local schools, including Drury High School.
A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served as a private, first class, with Company B, 48th Combat Engineers, in Africa and in Europe, including campaigns in Naples, Foggia and Southern France.
He was wounded at Monte Casino, Italy, on Jan. 5, 1944, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He served from 1942 until his honorable discharge Aug. 10, 1945.
Mr. Mirante was employed for more than 25 years by the former General Cable Co. in Williamstown, retiring in 1985. He first worked at the former Lloyd's Bakery and later at the former Windsor Print Works until it closed in the 1950s.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church and a life member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion.
His wife, the former Luisa Viola DiBicarri, whom he married April 12, 1947, died July 25, 1989.
He leaves six sisters, Beatrice Meranti, Rachel Canedy, Anna Mirante, Celia Mirante, Rita Mirante and Mary Aldrich, all of North Adams; a brother, A. Edward Mirante of North Adams, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters, Antonio Mirante Jr., James Mirante, Arthur Meranti, Theodore Meranti, Letizia "Laddie" Meranti, and infant Rachaele Mirante.
FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Mirante will be Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 8:15 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 64 Marshall St., North Adams, by the Rev. Daniel J. O'Hear, pastor.
Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are suggested for the Berkshire Meadows School of Great Barrington through the funeral home.
