Anne B. Rawlings, 81
EGREMONT, Mass. â€' Anne B. Rawlings, 81, of Rowe Road, North Egremont, died late Saturday evening, Nov. 15, 2003, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.Born in Fort Dix, N.J., on July 14, 1922, daughter of Army Brig. Gen. John C.P. Bartholf and Madeline Tomlinson Bartholf, she attended various schools, graduating from high school in New York and attending Beaver and Drexel colleges.
An Army veteran of World War II, she enlisted in 1943 and served with the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs). She flew a wide range of aircraft, including a B-26 bomber, towing targets for aerial gunnery practice. She was honorably discharged in 1944, having logged more than 300 flight hours.
A homemaker, Mrs. Rawlings resided in New Mexico with her family until moving to North Egremont in 1985.
She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Great Barrington. She was a member of the Order of Daedalians, an association for pilots, and the WASP association. She also enjoyed embroidery, sewing and picture puzzles, and was an avid reader. While in New Mexico, she enjoyed showing Morgan horses.
She and her husband, retired Air Force Col. John W. Rawlings Jr., were married Oct. 19, 1944, at Kearney Air Force Base, Neb.
Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Madeline "Lynne" A. Sjoquist and her husband, Frederick, of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, retired Lt. Col. Stephen H. Rawlings and his wife, Beckie, of Cabot, Ark.; a sister, Edith B. "Micky" Clark and her husband, retired Capt. R.C. Clark, of North Egremont; a brother, retired Brig. General John C. Bartholf and his wife, Patricia, of Lusby, Md.; and five grandchildren, Michael L. Adams, Joseph Matthew Adams, Stephanie A. Sjoquist, 2nd Lt. Lance W.H. Rawlings and Wesley H. Rawlings.
FUNERAL NOTICE â€' Anne B. Rawlings of North Egremont died Nov. 15, 2003. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 23, from 2 to 4 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. Funeral services will be private.
