LeRoy Hare, 84

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — LeRoy "Roy" Hare, 84, formerly of Cherry Hill Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Fairview Commons Nursing Home in Great Barrington.

Born on Sept. 2, 1917, in Mamaroneck, N.Y., son of William E. and Marion Reed Spader Hare, he graduated from Bellows High School in Mamaroneck. He attended Ohio State University.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a carpenter's mate, first class, with the Seabees (Construction Battalion).

A well-known architect, Mr. Hare was involved with commercial and residential architecture throughout Berkshire County, including the restorations of local historical buildings such as Proctor Hall, the Red Lion Inn and the post office building in Stockbridge.

He was a former member of the Stockbridge Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. He enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound and hiking the Berkshire Hills.

He and his wife, the former Charlotte May Griffen, whom he married March 16, 1940, in Mamaroneck, moved to Stockbridge in 1947.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Barbara Joy Beacco of Penobscot, Maine, Marion L. Hare of Bradford Woods, Pa., Susan "Betsy" Cobb of Monterey and Sandra Hare of Ellington, Conn.; two sons, Roy Ira Hare of Amherst and Brewster Hare of Austerlitz, N.Y.; a sister, Marion Madder of Bernardsville, N.J., nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by another son, William E. Hare II in 1999.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge, with the Rev. John Tarrant, rector, officiating. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of Finnerty & Stevens funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
